A Time for Choosing

October 27th was the 45th anniversary of the day Ronald Reagan gave this speech. I was 5 years old. Not being very political or frankly - interested - I have never seen this until now. I am amazed at how the main points in this speech would hold up today.

I'm wondering if this public 'states opt out', consumer, competitive, whatever you want to call it option - is a red herring. With all the incredibly opaque closed door meetings on healthcare, I would not be surprised to hear that Harry Reid threw this into the bill so everyone would concentrate on it and consequently be willing to accept anything and everything in the proposed legislation if only that public option was thrown out. Just a thought.

These are some of the people I can only wish would be forced to use the public option were it to be passed in the long awaited healthcare reform bill, resulting in insufficient numbers of physicians, long waits, rationing and a lower standard of care for millions of Americans who are already quite happy with their health insurance.

"We are worried about 'the cow' when it is all about the 'Ice Cream.'

The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade last year...
The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest.
I decided we would have an election for a class president.
We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.

To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members.
We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have.
We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot. The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids.
I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support.
I had never seen Olivia's mother.

The day arrived when they were to make their speeches.

Jamie went first.
He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better
place. He ended by promising to do his very best.
Everyone applauded and he sat down.

Now is was Olivia's turn to speak.
Her speech was concise.
She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream.."
She sat down.
The class went wild. "Yes! Yes!
We want ice cream."

She surely would say more. She did not have to.
A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream?
She wasn't sure.
Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it.
She didn't know.
The class really didn't care.
All they were thinking about was ice cream.
Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide.

Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and
52 percent of the people reacted like nine year olds.
They want ice cream.
The other 48 percent know
they're going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess."
This is the ice cream Obama promised us!

Remember, the government cannot give anything to anyone --
that they have not first taken away from someone else.

I've mentioned before that I regularly write to my representatives. It's Illinois, I honestly don't have much faith in MY representatives. But I still write. Participate in the process. These people work for us and if you write to the people who directly represent the citizens in your township, village or city, they listen more to you than to outsiders or generic calls to action. Be polite and cordial, but speak the truth. Do not be afraid to tell a personal story. Let them know your feelings in a logical and clear manner. And if you've written then once - feel free to do it again. As long as you are not nasty or threatening, they need to pay attention. They know when the next election is coming up.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is scheduling a trip to Norway in December --to pick up his Nobel Peace Prize. It comes with a $1.4 million award that the White House says will be going to charity. Obama says he knows that the Nobel Peace Prize has sometimes been used to "give momentum to a set of causes." And he says he'll accept the prize as a "call to action" to work with other nations on the world's problems.



(Spiegel Online) - US President Barack Obama has shelved his plans to attend festivities marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will reportedly take his place at the Nov. 9 celebrations.



Germany is going to have to wait longer than expected for US President Barack Obama's first official visit. Citing government sources in Berlin, Reuters reported on Friday that Obama will not attend the anniversary festivities marking two decades since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event will take place on Nov. 9 -- just two days before Obama embarks on a long-planned trip to Asia on Nov. 11.

Fighting the good fight

There are many of us who are worried about our country. We are concerned about this president and the people he surrounds himself with. We don't like seeing a man in the White House who does not seem to have a clue what it means to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

The co-worker that shares my office at work wrote an email to the Sanford Company. Have you heard of them? They make pens. She wrote an email because she got her hands on a particular pen they make, and she loves it. But God help me if this isn't the truth, the reason she wrote to them was to praise this pen, to let them know she really likes it but - she would like it a lot more if it were only an inch longer.

She professes to be very upset about the healthcare debate and the changes that could occur because of whatever bill is eventually passed. Yet she found it amusing when I went to a local town hall meeting. She thinks it is cute that I have sent several emails to the legislators for my state, and will continue to do so. She is amazed that being a single woman who cannot afford cashmere, I have still donated money to several candidates I consider having the best interests of this country at heart.

I am one person. I'm not well educated, I had the average American middle class up-bringing including siblings and pets. I don't have money, and I only have one vote. My state is unfortunately, as liberal as they come. But I won't stop doing whatever it is I can to stop this high speed Socialist train in Washington from reaching it's destination.

I keep hearing that people are waking up, and I believe they are. But that does not mean they are willing to do anything about it. Apparently they do not believe one person can make a difference. How do we reach them? Because their complacency and indifference and willingness to "wait and see" may be the difference between success and failure, freedom and tyranny.

I hate this game!

What's bothering me tonight?

1) The fact that I have been employed by a very large company for over 20 years and have a very good healthcare plan because of it, my insurance premiums are going to go up??


2) 90 some black religious leaders in Chicago are backing Todd Stroger for Cook County President, and are actually suggesting that other black candidates drop out of the race in order to not "split the black vote".

From the Chicago Tribune: "Members of Clergy for a Better Chicagoland said endorsing a single African-American candidate in the primary is an attempt to avert fragmenting black political power."

Given the fact that Cook County covers much more than just the city of Chicago, the black population is not even the majority. Not to mention the fact that if a white coalition of any sort dared to support a candidate on this basis - you would hear the cries of rasicm from here to California and back! And rightly so!

3) Chris Dodd and Barney Frank are still in office.


4) 15 year old kid with 2nd degree burns over 80% of his body over $40.00 and because he called the police when these same KIDS stole his father's bike. WTF???


5) I won't have time to read the new books I received today and had to fight a rather large spider and 2 cats to get into the house, unless I give up time on the Internet. I find it disconcerting to realize how tough it is to break a way for a while.

Chicago NOlympics!

I'm a little disappointed. Not about the Olympics, I was actually pretty ambivalent about it even though I live in a Chicago suburb. But after it was announced that Chicago was knocked out in the first round, I was shocked but relieved. And then I must admit to experiencing a bit of glee. Congratulatons Rio!!

No, what I'm disappointed about is that Sean Hannity beat me to the great article in the Times Online from the U.K. today and talked about it before I could write about it. I was searching for something that said how I was feeling, and this article does. The title "Obama's Olympic failure will only add to doubts about his presidency." The saying 'perception is reality' comes to mind. And the perception of our president in the minds of the rest of the world is that he's well, a girlie-man. No one is afraid of him.

President Obama thought this Olympic bid was about him. He said "I know you face a difficult choice among several great cities and nations with impressive bids of their own. So I've come here today to urge you to choose Chicago for the same reasons I chose Chicago nearly twenty-five years ago - the reasons I fell in love with the city I still call home." And "Each one of those neighborhoods - from Greektown to the Ukrainian Village; from Devon to Pilsen to Washington Park - has its own unique character, history, song, and sometimes language. But each is also a part of our city - one city - a city where I finally found a home."

"We stand at a moment in history when the fate of each nation is inextricably linked to the fate of all nations - a time of common challenges that require a common effort. And I ran for President because I believed deeply that at this defining moment, the United States of America has a responsibility to help lead that effort, and to forge new partnerships with the nations and peoples of the world."

"Nearly one year ago, on a clear November night, people from every corner of the world gathered in the city of Chicago or in front of their televisions to watch the results of the U.S. Presidential election. Their interest wasn't about me as an individual. .. " Why on earth did he say this? The man is still campaigning and imagines that glowing aura around his head is real! Did he really believe that the IOC and the other bidder's delegations cared about his success in our presidential election??

Of course he had to say something apologetic and remind people that he is different from that evil guy George W. Bush - “We’ve got everyone. This could be a meeting in Chicago, because we look like the world. Over the last several years sometimes that fundamental truth about the United States has been lost,” he said.

Last several years, think he meant EIGHT years in particular?

The man is pathetic. Utterly and tragically (for us) pathetic.

Obama thought he could go to Copenhagen and burst onto the scene like a rock star and MAKE it happen for Chicago by the sheer force of his personality.

But guess what, Mr. President? Turns out - you're not all that. Glad others see it as well.
